We manufacture offroad lighted whips. We use the Supper Side light fiber that Eddy from Poly Optics supplies us with. We use this fiber inside a polycarbonate tube that is lit with a single L.E.D. from one end to produce a lighted whip. We also use it for accent lighting, in the ceiling for a dome light and directly on the bottom of offroad vehicles for some cool ground lighting. In this application the fiber gets abused from sand, rocks, and when the car jumps and bottoms out on the ground. We have been using this fiber for about 10 years. All of this fiber is used in the automotive offroad industry. The reason we went with fiber in our application is L.E.D.s do not hold up in our lighting application. The amount of abuse,flex, and vibration that a whip (offroad flag pole) gets, the only way to get reliable light is with fiber. L.E.Ds in a strip just will not hold up to the abuse. The fiber must be able to withstand a wide range of temperature extremes and not crack or yellow. We seldom see any type of aging with Eddy's products and they have been subjected to temperatures as cold as -30 Celsius and in the roof line area of a limousine in the middle of the Las Vegas desert summer heat it is not uncommon for the temperatures inside a closed up black car to exceed 55 Celsius.
